Rationale
Potent inhibitor of CYP3A4; MI-complex formation? Conflicting references. Several Swedish observations of non-porphyrinogenicity. Probably insignificant hepatic load in local dental use.
Chemical description
Tetracycline broad spectrum antibiotic with alkylamino group used in local treatment of tooth-pocket infections. Mainly unmetabolized but CYPs appear to be involved to some extent since CYP-inducing drugs result in an increase in its metabolism. Inhibitor of CYP 3A4 (MI-complex?).The concentration of the antibiotic in blood does not exceed 1 ug/ml.
